Introduction to skin hydration boosters

With the passage of time, skin can become dry, and fine lines and wrinkles may appear. Skin hydration boosters are a type of aesthetic treatment used to increase skin hydration, improve skin elasticity, and reduce fine lines. As with any aesthetic treatment, the decision to receive skin boosters treatment should be made in consultation with a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Why skin hydration boosters?

Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of your skin that keeps it hydrated and soft. With age, or due to a harsh environment, the hyaluronic acid content in your skin may decrease, and your skin may lose some of its elasticity and hydration.

Skin hydration boosters restore the natural composition of your skin. It boosts skin elasticity and a reduction of skin roughness. Your skin becomes smooth and hydrated for a refreshed and healthy look.

TREATMENT AREAS

Skin hydration boosters are used to increase skin hydration in areas that have lost elasticity or where fine lines and wrinkles have started to appear. They are also used to improve skin imperfections, such as those caused by atrophic (depressed) acne scars. Skin hydration boosters can be used to refresh the skin on the face, neck, décolletage and hands.

The treatment

A typical program using skin hydration boosters involves three treatment sessions, two to four weeks apart. In some cases, improvement may be seen after the initial session, but the full effects are typically not visible until after the last session. The effects of treatment may still be visible 12 months after the initial treatment, depending on the treatment area, the product used and the characteristics of the individual.

After the initial treatments, medical practitioners may recommend a maintenance treatment every six months to ensure lasting results.

As with all medicines, skin boosters treatment can cause side effects. Your registered healthcare practitioner should inform you of these potential risks, as well as any side effects and contraindications prior to treatment. You should also ask to see the Patient Information leaflet and Aftercare brochure provided to practitioners. Please note that the information on this website does not in any way replace the professional advice of the treating healthcare practitioner.

Skin hydration boosters are medical devices that are classified for professional use only and must be administered by qualified healthcare practitioners.

How it works

HOW IT WORKS

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that has a unique ability to bind water. It keeps your body tissues soft, hydrated and flexible.

Natural hyaluronic acid in the body quickly forms and degrades (in 24-48 hours). Galderma has used stabilization technologies that delay degradation by cross-linking the hyaluronic acid molecules. This way, the skin hydration boosters will form small “reservoirs” of moisture beneath the skin surface that will give you long-lasting hydration and radiance.

Skin hydration boosters are used to restore skin hydro-balance, improve skin structure and improve the elasticity of the skin. The below gallery shows examples of how patients appeared before and after treatment with skin hydration boosters.

FAQs

Your healthcare practitioner will clean the area that will be treated. Tiny droplets of skin hydration boosters will then be injected just below the skin surface through a fine needle to increase your skin hydration. A local anaesthetic and/or a product containing an anaesthetic agent may be used to make the procedure more comfortable for you.

Depending on the product and the area being treated, a treatment may take between 15 and 45 minutes. A skin hydration booster treatment program might involve two to three treatment sessions, 2-4 weeks apart. After the initial treatments, healthcare practitioners may recommend a maintenance treatment every 6 months to ensure lasting results.

Some people may experience mild discomfort. Some skin hydration boosters contain a local anaesthetic to make treatment more comfortable. You and your healthcare practitioner may decide whether additional pain relief is needed.

After treatment you will receive post-treatment guidelines from your healthcare practitioner. It is normal to experience some discomfort, such as redness, swelling, pain, itching, bruising or tenderness at the treatment site. These side effects generally disappear within one week after injection. See 'What are the possible side effects' below. Make sure that you discuss potential treatment risks with your healthcare practitioner.

Yes, to optimize satisfactory results and to reduce the risk of complications there are several precautions that you should discuss with your healthcare practitioner:

  • If you are taking immunosuppressive medications.
  • If you are taking aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or any other medication that affects bleeding.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • If you are planning or have recently had other cosmetic procedures.
  • If you have any questions about precautions related to the treatment.

It is important when discussing your medical history to tell your practitioner everything, including all medicines that you are taking, any present and past allergies and their seriousness, and all current or past medical conditions you have had. Your healthcare practitioner will discuss potential side effects from the injection of skin hydration boosters and how serious they may be. Your healthcare practitioner will also ask you if you have received previous aesthetic treatments, both surgical and non-surgical.

When it comes to skin hydration booster treatments, results are progressive; this means that changes in skin condition are subtle. Achieving the full effect usually requires a treatment program of two to three treatment sessions, two to four weeks apart. Refer to the 'How long does a treatment with skin hydration boosters take?' section, above.
