Chin
Our lower faces are highly dynamic, with the mouth and chin constantly moving as we talk. This range of movement allows us to express complex thoughts and emotions, to subtly smile and to laugh wholeheartedly. However, time and harsh environments can leave their mark on our lower faces.
The effect of ageing on the lower face and chin
Natural compounds including collagen, hyaluronic acid and elastin help to give young skin its full and firm appearance. From our twenties onwards, production of these compounds steadily decreases, leading to a loss of elasticity and firmness and the formation of wrinkles. During our thirties and forties, dynamic wrinkles appear in areas that regularly move, while static wrinkles appear elsewhere. Nasolabial folds (smile lines) form between the nose and mouth; wrinkles may develop at the corner of the mouth; and pronounced ‘marionette’ lines may develop between the edge of the mouth and chin. Meanwhile, bone loss in the chin may lead to a loss of facial definition and contours. Exposure to harsh sunlight has a cumulative effect that becomes especially apparent in the forties and fifties.
Aesthetic treatments for the lower face and chin
Dermal fillers, collagen stimulators and skin hydration boosters are three potential chin line fillers treatments for reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and restoring lost volume to the lower face and chin.
Filling-style dermal fillers are used to reduce lines and wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds (smile lines) and marionette lines (laugh lines). When placed in the deeper layers of the skin, fillers provide a consistency that is soft and yet firm enough to provide volume and shape. Lifting-style dermal fillers are used to enhance and maintain facial shape, angles and contours. They may be used to compensate for the effect that bone loss in the chin has on appearance. Collagen stimulators contain a biodegradable substance that, when injected in the deeper layers of the skin, helps stimulate the skin’s own natural collagen production, improving its inner structure. Dermal fillers for chin may be used on areas including smile lines, laugh lines and chin wrinkles. Skin hydration boosters, meanwhile, are used to increase hydration in areas that feel dry, that have lost elasticity, or where fine lines and wrinkles have started to appear. They may be used on fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth.
